Pastiche illustrator Garry Walton's illustrations for The Observer, The New Review magazine of Geoff Dyer's camping trip

Garry Walton - The Observer

Garry Walton had great fun creating this brilliantly nostalgic pastiche illustration for the latest cover of The New Review in The Observer.

Taking inspiration from the classic 1950's Boy’s Own Paper, Garry created a wonderfully tongue-in-cheek scene to accompany author Geoff Dyer’s story about his unfortunate, tick-infested camping trip in the South Downs.

With its vintage adventure-story aesthetic, bold composition and exaggerated sense of drama, the artwork perfectly captures the humour and spirit of Dyer’s tale.

A fantastic project for Garry, who relished the opportunity to delve into the visual language of classic boys’ adventure magazines and give it his own distinctive twist.
